“I just recently read Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel Fun Home. There’s an adaptation of it on Broadway right now, and when I saw it, it basically destroyed me — in a good way. It’s the kind of theatrical experience that tears you apart and then puts you back together again. I found myself crying on the sidewalk afterward. Talk about catharsis. I had to see where that beautiful thing came from, so I picked up Bechdel’s book and, boy, it does not disappoint. It’s just so full of heart and truth and guts. I’m also reading Nicholson Baker’s Traveling Sprinkler. He’s the kind of writer that makes you feel like you’re stumbling into insight. He’s magic at that.”
